There is a new box on the home page called "Stewardship".

We are the stewards of the worlds we inhabit, whether Planet Earth or Planet Avanoo. When we keep in mind our relationship with the larger whole and our responsibility toward all of life, there is a tendency toward harmony.

Here are some principles of right relationship that I found today.

I recorded this version after the Media That Matters conference at Hollyhock in May 2009.

When I was a red carpet trodden upon
I thought nothing of it.
Those who hastened or stood quietly in line,
I led them all within.
And if most saw mainly vaulted ceilings
And not love in disguise,
Well, some looked up and some looked down
And some just closed their eyes.

I've been silver and I've been gold
And I've been a hole in one.
I've worn my prayers as these threadbare clothes
And learned that never was there too much love.
But I've been copper and I've been tin and
I thought nothing of it.
Eyes wide open and still I spin,
I've stared down the bottomless pit.

I've been the fire and I've been the wood
And I've been the empty one.
I've worn my prayers as only I could
And learned that never was there too much love.
I've learned that never was there too much love.

I met Christen this summer at Hollyhock, where she played her amazing, evocative, and healing music for us as we struggled to come to terms with climate change and other vast consequences of human unconsciousness.

From her website, http://itsnotaviolin.com/music/:

Vol I: Battle Cry is a musical depiction of the emotional journey we each take to unlock our power. I wrote this album to support you in finding and releasing your battle cry in a moment in time when we are faced with what Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. described as the “fierce urgency of now” — when our vigilance or neglect determines the fate of generations. In each of us lives a unique passion – a dream that wants to be worked into reality. It is critical for your dream to be manifested, for your gift to be given, for your power to be brought forth if we are to rise together and overcome our collective challenges. My dream is that this music will support you, as you step into your power and offer all you have to give.

Here's a track from Battle Cry that's a free download:

The whole album is excellent.

Dear friends,

Thank you for this invitation to Journalism That Matters! I will be there, and I will be carrying with me some powerful Media That Matters energy.

I attended the previous JTM (at the Poynter Institute in March '09) and witnessed first-hand how journalists are grappling with both the evolving media landscape and their place in it. Whereas before the roles for journalists were extremely well-defined, in the new news ecology that is no longer the case, and that is perhaps an understatement.

These are times of radical uncertainty and also of radical opportunity for journalists, yes, but really for media professionals in general. For one, the tidal wave of social media need not be seen as a threat, and yet usually it is. We experienced this poignantly at MTM back in May. And I felt that together we worked through the process beautifully.

To move beyond this period of unsettling, then, it seems we have to work through all sorts of questions of identity. Who are we beyond the tools we have used? What is the narrative that drives us personally and gives us strength in these challenging times? (Thanks, Mike!) What skills and experiences do we hold that are not only still relevant, but can enable us to prosper?

One of the outcomes of the JTM Poynter event was that almost a hundred people came away with a clearer sense that they are making media that matters, and that their work in this age of information overload and media polarization is more necessary and important than ever.

We as MTM alums can offer our compassion and wide-ranging experiences, which I believe will help our compatriots through their respective transitions. Those of us who have made or begun the journey have much to offer through our lived examples.

We have seen through the collaborations of Kevin Kelley and Rachel Bagby, the Midway team, the Plastic Pollution Coalition, and the Resilient People conference - just to name a few impactful projects with strong ties to MTM - that our ability to make media that matters depends on our ability to reach out and connect. Such examples will, I believe, prove inspirational and instructive.

Lastly (and I apologize that this has turned out to be so long!), we can learn from those at JTM who are successfully reinventing the media ecology in the Pacific Northwest. And I hope that in the process we will make an opportunity to convene a sort of mini-MTM at JTM, with the goal of reaffirming our existing connections and working towards a positively transformational agenda for MTM '10. We talked before about having more than just the one big event every year... Let's seize the day!

I hope that many of you will be able to join us in Seattle.

Blessings,

Writers of the world, please take note of a delightful and profound form of poetry called the Way of 10.

http://thewayof10.com/

The first 10 ever written sounds like this (and it's important to say it):

sitting
on poems
the mountain writes me
  ~Rachel Bagby

Rachel Bagby developed the form back in 1980. She is a friend and a deeply inspiring person whom I met at Hollyhock. It is my pleasure to connect you to her on the 'Noo!
