You may now specify a "noorl" for collaborations and places. For example:

  http://www.avanoo.com/noorl/TheCollaborativeClass
  http://www.avanoo.com/noorl/Seattle

A noorl (pronounced neural) is like a URL (rhymes with neural). Noorls are human-friendly locations you can give your friends.

As this is an experimental feature, everything about it might change. :)

Your feedback is welcome!

The process for uploading audio files and images for use on Avanoo is slowly being improved. A lot of time and money could go into making the upload and embed processes flow like water. We'll get there...

Meanwhile, here's what changed today:

  • You may now add a description to uploaded media. The description field is also be a good place to give proper attribution for photographs (provided it is proper to use them in the first place).
  • The HTML/embed tips on the create post/poll/reply pages have been made a little clearer.

As always, your feedback is welcome!

The Noostream filters are getting sweeter and sweeter, if I do say so myself. Thanks to the others who have helped with the thought and design process!

We're getting a new, simpler home page tomorrow! But I don't know what it looks like yet.

While I sleep, perhaps you can reply to say what you would like to see on the home page. Some principles and questions that may guide us:
  • We need to de-clutter. There's too much text now. There should be a feeling of spaciousness.
  • Two columns instead of three columns
  • Focus the message. Currently, we present too many different ideas of what Avanoo is.
  • Instead of showing the Noostream (there's a whole page for that, with lots of functionality), what can we show that will invite new users to explore?
  • Do we want to keep featured people/places/collaborations?
  • The footer is confusing, with lots of different stuff, so maybe we can clean that up too.

Thanks in advance!

It is now possible to choose to have your real name displayed on Avanoo. The choice is yours.

For existing users, the default (unless/until changed) is to continue to display one's username. For new users, the default will be to display one's real name.

Why the change? Two reasons:
  1. Avanoo enables collaboration online and offline, in virtual spaces and real-world spaces. For the two to come together, we need to ability to "get real" with each other.
  2. Considering the enormous task before us in this decisive decade, we need to build trust relationships so that we can work together at all levels (heart, mind, spirit). Using our real names fosters trust.

It's not required that you choose to use your real name. It's not a "should thing." The choice is simply yours to make.

Go to account settings to see what I spent nearly all of yesterday working on. :)

Avanites!

The Noostream filters are now quite a bit more powerful. The most visible change is that keyword search and taxonomy have been integrated.

To set expectations, the taxonomy filters don't do much yet, but will become very important as more and more creations get taxonomized. At the moment, only collaborations can be taxonomized, but soon all creations will be taxonomizable.

Once there is more activity around the taxonomy, we can expand the number of options from six to whatever feels appropriate.

The site is now organized around collaborations.

Please consider editing your "places" and "things" to give them more descriptive type labels and to select relevant areas of collaboration. This will enable larger numbers of people to self-organize more effectively using Avanoo.

A lot more collaboration-related functionality will be rolling out over the next two weeks.

I've spent hours and hours thinking about a single descriptive word that can apply to conversations, places, things, projects, ideas, missions, albums, etc.

The only word that feels *really* right is collaboration. All of the above types are collaborations, if you consider that we have been having conversations about places and things.

Katie had some excellent insights into the important nuances of collaborations and projects (which is what we had long ago). Perhaps she could share those here?

Soon - perhaps tomorrow - there will be a new interface for starting collaborations, which will enable you to pick a label from among many more options than just places and things. And you will get access to other goodies in the process.

But for now, I must rest. It's amazing how tiring it can be to write software all day in one of the most beautiful places on earth!

I am being told my multiple compatriots that it's time for Avanoo to become the go-to place for the consciousness movement. It is time for the millions of people in the world who care about living in balance with others and with the whole earth to have a place where they can connect, share, and enact the healing that is needed in the world.

No doubt this sounds ambitious. However, Avanoo has the right energy, and people who can help spread the word on a global scale are emerging faster and faster.

I feel a growing alignment. And I feel that the years of gestation and the past few months of intensive software revisions (there's still a bit more to do) are coming to fruition.

It may seem as if we've been at this point before, but we didn't have it quite right back in 2007 and 2008. In speaking for myself I can say that I had a lot of opening up to do. My own rough edges were holding Avanoo back.

Now, this time is for real. This is the way forward. We have important work to do. And connecting the global heart - as I sometimes put it - will be fun.

In the next one to two weeks, I'd like to explore with you how we can, as Gandhi said, be the change that we would see in the world.

On pages for individual posts, replies, etc., the "Share" link has turned into the "Invite" link.

We are continually sharing on Avanoo and so the second use of the word was confusing, to me at least. If you feel that share is a better word, please let me know.

An invitation can be deeply empowering. For instance, to invite someone into a space is a form of sharing, yes, and is also a form of opening.

The functionality and visual interface have been upgraded as well. When you click "Invite" on an item page, you will be taken to a more appealing page that allows you to invite your friends in two ways:
  1. Invite people on other social platforms. (This is new.)
  2. Invite Avanites who are listening to you.

Some of you remember the days when notifications of new content on Avanoo arrived conveniently in your inbox. Those days have returned, but with some important improvements.
  1. Email digests are only sent out once per day.
  2. Emailed notifications only include items created in the past 24 hours that you haven't already marked as hidden via the Web interface.
We at Avanoo have a strong commitment to only sending emails that you want to receive. So for existing users, email digests are turned off by default, to allow you to consciously choose whether to receive them.

To turn on email digests, go to my avanoo > account settings and select "Send me a daily digest of notifications related to what I am listening to."

Love,

Avanoo

Many, many invisible changes were made to Avanoo over the last week. Today, I was able to make some more visible changes, which is satisfying. Here are two:

1. The notifications page now ressembles the Noostream page. Notifications are how we will be able to maintain an intimate user experience even as the site grows.

2. The home page has been somewhat redesigned. More is coming, including more dynamism.

There's much that I could say, but now I need to rest. Meanwhile, enjoy!

It is now possible to access your Avanoo profile via a URL like this:

  http://www.avanoo.com/Wilford

There are two exceptions:
  1. If your username contains spaces, then you'll need to change your username to contain no spaces. Usernames are no longer allowed to contain spaces for this and other reasons. Perhaps very soon I will update the few that do by removing the spaces.
  2. If you change your username, it may take up to five minutes for the URL scheme to "catch up." In the future, I will make it so that there is no delay.

  1. Questions are back! You may once again easily create and browse questions.
  2. The random function is back as a colorful link on the Noostream page.
  3. If you click to view your own creations via the "my avanoo" pulldown, or if you search for your own creations via the Noostream page, you will see that the page is called "My Noostream".
    • My Noostream shows you only your own creations.
    • My Noostream shows you both your listed and unlisted creations.
  4. When others look at your creations, the page is called "[Your username] Noostream".
    • [Your username] Noostream shows only your listed creations. Your unlisted creations can only be viewed "in context". I.e., unlisted comments will have to be viewed via the commented-on item, unlisted posts will have to be viewed via the people/places/things they are part of, etc.

Recently, I've been focused intensely on certain programming challenges that seemed too large to address for over a year. Well, they have now been addressed. :)

I took the site down for about an hour this evening to implement an important low-level change that enables something fairly esoteric, blah blah, so I'll spare you the details.

After my East Coast trip, I'll be on an island for much of February writing software that can help take Avanoo to the next level. As we proceed, I'm hoping to get lots of advice and feedback from all of you.

Thanks for being here and for giving me so many reasons to keep up the work!

I am back in Williamstown, Massachusetts for meetings and to write software. This weekend, my goal is to code for two solid days.

Much of the focus is now turning to the Semantic Computing Framework, which I created and then put on the shelf for almost a year. I will also be rewriting the notification mechanism and re-instituting the email notifications for those who would like to be notified when there is activity on Avanoo related to items they are listening to.

There's an infinite amount of work to do. I'm mindful that Avanoo will forever be incomplete, in a sense. But I also have the sense that when people's hearts and minds start to come together more fully, the infinite will become possible. Meanwhile, there are certain technical details to arrange as part of the foundation...

A number of things changed on the site today.
  1. The stream on the home page now includes comments, thus making the overheard box that was in the middle column obsolete. What had been "Stream of Consciousness" on the home page was renamed to "Overheard" because the concept of being overheard is still really cool.
  2. The Noostream page is much less cluttered. For similar reasons, the dense overheard text was removed. The filters are collected together in the right column, with the addition of a country filter.
  3. Since the Noostream now has a country filter, the links in the site footer that used to point to "Avanites by Country" now point to the Noostream page with filters set to Type=People and Country=<whatever>. So what had been two different pages with various functional and visual inconsistencies are now one!
  4. User profile pages once again show stewardships and "My Noostream".
  5. The about page now includes a nifty graphic that Katie made, which we're calling the "noostring". Farewell, fair amoeba, you served us well!
  6. The text that describes Avanoo on the home page has been further improved. What had been multiple metaphors (Living Library, Global Hometown, etc.) have been brought more or less into alignment.

This is probably just about all I can do today as I am feeling a little fried.

I invite your suggestions for anything that can be improved. My next coding sprint is likely to be next weekend.

Love,

Wilford

Wow... I just spent three weeks on the road meeting, conferencing, workshopping, and socializing with hundreds of people. Today I'm catching up on taxes for two companies as well as my own personal taxes.

Tomorrow and Sunday I'll be redoing the Noostream page and the notification mechanism on the site.

And at the end of the month, I think we'll be ready to tell our friends about Avanoo!

Love to all.

Today I made it possible to post to other people. Previously one could only post to places and things. So now you can post to people, places, and things.

To the extent that what we create pertains to someone on Avanoo, we can make such creations part of that person. How poetic!

It's lovely to witness how we are, in a sense, writing each other. That is true on a profound level and it's worth celebrating the process of co-creation.
